What may have caused this and how can I help my sweet dog? Is it okay to put lotion or creams to relieve the cracked paw pads? She plays outside during the day and stays in at night

The best thing to put on the would be Bag Balm. It used to be used for cows udder that got sore, hence the name. My grandmother used it on everything for years. You can get it at any pet store but it is also sold at Wal Mart, Meijer, K-Mart, ect.... in the health and beauty care department. Good luck.

Put a bit of moisturiser on the paws. The sun can cause cracks, also hot ground. Dogs can get sunburnt, put a bit of sunscreen on their noses and ears and belly, if they like to lay upside down.

After years of raising Chihuahuas,I finally figured out that the problem you have described is brought on by standing on cement and concrete.It draws the moisture out of the pads and makes them crack open,Yes you can rub in moisturizer but make sure they don't lick it off.Get them off of the cement and they will start to clear up in a couple of weeks.

What you can do is take it to the vet. They can give you medicine and tell you what may have caused cracked paw pads.

Dog paws I think have their own moisturizing lotion. Contact your vet about your situation. It could be if your dog is walking/running on hard rocky cement. Also, (I'm not sure if it's possible for dogs) she could have cracked feet. But, for positive news, contact your vet.
