I have an interview tomorrow for a position as a school counselor. The job level is high school. I currently work in a middle school and an elementary school. There are three parts to the interview: one, I will be interviewed by 4 teachers; two, I will be interviewed by the current counselors; three, I will be interviewed by the principal and superintendent. Any advice on what I can expect?

The fact that teachers are involved in the interview process suggests that the school is one in which collegiality is valued. Be sure you keep that in mind as you answer questions.

Before the interview find out as much as you can about the school itself - its demographics and recent test scores. Use that information to help show you would address the needs of this student body.

When interviewed by the principal and superintendent, keep in mind that the principal will be the one you have to work with but the superintendent is the one who might be watching for your awareness of policies and procedures.

Just because you have never done the particular job doesn't mean you can't do it. Make sure you indicate your willingness to learn, especially from the other counselors on staff but don't make it sound like you'll be a burden to them. Show how your skills and knowledge from your current job will be transferable and an asset to the students and the school.

Good luck!

At least you have some experience to build upon.

First, be humble, but highlight your past achievements/successes.

Second, discuss your experiences.

Third, keep your answers flexible. Scenario-type questions should almost always start, "It depends."

Fourth, realize that the school may already know who they want for the position, but must grant interviews for everyone in the system--the job be already be filled!

You can expect the same questions asked to all interviewees, and specific follow up questions based on your responses.

I would be prepared to answer the, "Why do you want to work for us?" or similar "What would your principal say if I called him/her up to offer you a job?" questions. They are fishing for trouble spots that you will likely give away in your answers.

Good Luck....

One major area that you will need to be up on is how you are going to keep every student informed on where they are with regards to graduation.

You may also have to know what you are going to do with different social situations. Like teen pregnancy, parents divorcing at home, and other young adult issues.

Good luck!

These helped my friend immensely - she said many of the school questions came right from this list:

Here is an article that will help with "better answers" as well:
