For some time now, each generation has been, on the average, taller than their parents. It is thought that better nutrition, especially pre-natally and in the first years of life, enable one to take better advantage of ones genetic potential.

There is also a lot of difference in the way genes from mother's side and father's side combine. Surely you know brothers where one is much taller/fatter/darker than the other, even though they have the same parents; even fraternal twins can be very different in physical features. My father-in-law is quite short (maybe 5'2") and heavy set. He has a cousin who is 6'8" and very slender. Nobody would think they were related at all.

May be his parents were ill as children - supressing their actual height. However if they hadn't been ill they would have grown taller.

Alterrnatively may be had a genetic malfunction /abnormality in his height gene.

Well, there is a theory that sports such as basketball and volleyball make you grow taller if you play them as a kid cause they make your spine longer or something.
