There are 1.609344 kilometres in 1 mile - you could round it down to 1.6 to make things easy or even say that there are 8 kilometres in 5 miles. Thats the rule of thumb I always use.

1 Mile is equal to 1.609 kilometres.
If you are travelling in Europe and want to convert as you go along, an approximate calculation is to divide the Km by 8 and multiply by 5.
So 16km will approximate to 10 miles.
The actual answer is that 10 miles equals 16.093Km
