In your wireless router's configuration you will see a wireless network settings, make sure encryption is turned on and that you choose a secure password. Preferably use WPA encryption and use a passphrase instead of a word. "Here is my passphrase." is more secure then "password". Your computer will detect that there is encryption and will ask you for the encryption key, once entered you should not need to enter it again unless you change the key. There should also be a setting in your router that will display all connected devices, if you see one that you do not recognize then someone is using your network.

Assuming that the "netgear usb adapter" is actually a wireless router, read the user manual. Look for instructions on how to set up a WPA password.

WPA encryption will protect your WiFi from hitch hikers.

Still stuck? Call NetGear or go to their web site and read the FAQs.

restrict number of wireless connection to the router. If you have many computer and the cable is full, wireless connection is the best way. If you have two laptop or desktop that wanna connect through wireless just allow two. If you have three, allow three. The most important part is use password! The longer the better. And when there is no use, shut it down to prevent any hackers hack in without your notice.

You would want to setup the encryption in the rtr like WEP. If you remeber the setup asking for it and you put it in, you should be ok. Otherwise, I would check with the rtr manufacturer's website or tech support to make sure.
