Great question! So many believe "yes", extra-terrestrials do exist, yet there is not definitive proof.

Xenobiologists (people who study alien life) think that we are looking in the wrong places for the wrong things - that we are being too egotistical and looking for "humanoid" life, when all the science of the universe would show that life would not be humanoid.

Here are some interesting things to note: the most caustic (dangerous) substance in the universe is oxygen - it breaks down everything over time, so it is not only improbable, it is illogical that anything would use it as a life-source. Since helium and hydrogen are much more abundant throughout the universe, and are FAR less caustic, I believe other lifeforms would breathe it to survive.

Carbon is also not that abundant universe-wide. We are all carbon-based life forms, where as other beings would more likely have taken the building block silicon (more abundant).

I think if we do find life forms, they will be silicon-based and hydrogen-breathing.

That is unless you are a Scientologist and believe that we actually are the progeny of alien life.

It is all based on the fact that the thought of being alone in the universe is so scary, that people want to believe. We also hope that our technology will someday allow us to have faster-than-light speed travel and super ray guns. We will also need somewhere to go when we deplete all of our natural resources - if we believe that aliens exist, then that gives us hope that there are other worlds we can travel to when Earth become uninhabitable.

Oh, and in the literal sense of the word, "aliens" do exist. Alien simply means someone from a place other than yours, so Canadians are aliens when they travel to Germany and Japanese are aliens when they travel to Mexico. :)

So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.

Why haven't we heard from them?

Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.

Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.

Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.

Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.

Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.

It is really impossible to know for sure.

The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

it is very very very likely that aliens exist, but not in the sense that you may think of them. for example, something as boring as a bacteria has been shown to have lived on mars. now, technically that IS! a life form alien to anything that we know. so, sorry to break it to you but the chances of Roswell happening any time soon are slim.

Just think, if aliens existed who were clever enough to built a ship that could travel through the vast areas of space. don't you think they would have phoned already?

Yes, but it depends on your definition of "alien." We would be silly to believe that with so many planets in the universe we were the only one with life on it. The life on other planets would not necessarily be cognizant. It may be in a form similar to our bacteria.

Simple answer - the universe is just too frikkin' big for it NOT to exist, in more shapes, colours, cultures and stages of evolution than we can begin to comprehend.
