It might be an error on your billing, but it could easily be correct. It could be the structure of the house / how its built. Could be drafty, bad windows, etc... Also, gas prices are up nowadays. Definitely call the gas company and have them explain why it is so high. They will probably be rude and not give you a straight answer, but worth a try. If that's actually the correct amount....speak with your landlord and have them reimburse you or at least pay for energysaving work to be done on the house.

If you live in the same area, the houses are a comparable size and your life style hasn't changed significantly, I would question that bill -- big time. Did the usage start the day you moved in, or were there charges left from the previous tenet? Are there leaks? Look at bills/usage of the previous tenet. Has the cost of gas jumped that much? Are you using the same type gas and the same gas provider?

I would call the gas company and ask about previous bills for this house. It could be that the home is not energy efficient. This includes lack of insulation and leaky windows and doors. The heating system could also be inefficient. Energy prices are high so fixing any loss of heat can save lots of money.

How high are the ceilings in your house? I moved into a new house that had 10 ft ceilings (heat rises). I almost had a heart attack when I saw the first bill!!
Also, you may want to check for hot water leaks...that can make your bill go way up as well.

Did you get the previous tenants' account ruled off? I'd speak with neghbours in similar properties to see what they pay.
