The trick in the movie is based on a famous illusion by Robert Houdin, who, with the aid of an early form of electromagnet beneath the performing area, caused a small metal case to be almost literally glued to the floor---strong men strained and sweated, trying to lift the case---then Houdin called a small child up from the audience, turned off the magnetic current with a hidden switch, and the child lifted the case easily and freely and handed it to Houdin.
The sword illusion in the film is made deliberately harder to prepare, because one is never supposed to be really sure if Norton's illusions are real magic or not---the actors in the film are simply demonstrating their ability to pretend that the sword is unliftable.
It's a movie---magic enough!
