How do I change a circuit breaker in my home? does it need to be replaced if it keeps on tripping even after all appliances have been disconnected?

It sounds like the breaker is bad. Turn your main breaker off and remove the cover panel. Pull the circuit breaker out (may take some persuasion) and with a screw driver disconnect the wire going to the breaker.

Take to the store to properly size the replacement. Insert the wire in the new breaker and pivot the new breaker in place. Reinstall the cover and turn your main breaker on.

USA It is always best to have a licensed electrician do this kind of work.

BE SAFE !! Do not touch more than one metal object at a time with your hands or tools!! DO NOT touch / hold onto the wires - except the one wire attached to the breaker to be replaced.

If possible, buy a replacement breaker ahead of time. Get the exact same brand and rating. If you cannot determine this ahead of time, then wait until you pull the old one out, and take that to the store to buy the replacement.

Remove the cover of the panel box. Turn the main breaker off (so have a flashlight handy). Pull out the defective breaker. Usually, the end of the breaker at the center of the panel has to pull out before the other end of the breaker will pull out. You might have to wiggle it, or even push it out by inserting a plastic item between the bad breaker and the one to the left (or right) of it. Remember, the top of the panel and the wires at the main breaker are hot. Use a screw driver to loosen the screw holding the wire in place and remove the wire. Place the wire on the new breaker, and install the new breaker.

If the new breaker also trips constantly, you have a short circuit or ground fault somewhere - and you will need to call a licensed electrician.

First you should know what you are doing. If it is a fuse, remember that one of the holders is still hot! Don't touch it. If it is a breaker, (A lot of folks call this a fuse), hire an electrician to change it. It is not something a homeowner should do unless they have training and are qualified. Rule no. 1,, BE Careful.

You said you had everything disconnected from this breaker??...if you did it would not knock or kick off...there is some kind of underlying problem there...It is fairly easy to change a breaker..turn off main power 200 amp breaker usually...take cover off of panel....lift breaker from center of box first then pull out..take screwdriver and remove wire...buy exact size breaker back..reinstall breaker. put cover back on box....turn power back on..if breaker knocks after installing call electrician immediately.....40 years hvac electrical and electric motor repair

Pull it out and pop in a new one with the same numbers on it. You shouldn't need any tools
