It is a court sitting in camera, i.e. where everyone whose presence is not actually required for the conduct of the case is excluded. The majority of courts are open to the public, with the exception of youth courts and family courts, but occasionally when something is of a highly sensitive nature, the judge will rule that the court will sit in closed session.

Private. Secret. No press or public allowed. Only those directly involved with the case attend. The Jury is not allowed to mix with the general public and they are protected from the general public -ie. us, everyone.
In the pursuit of justice it is an effort to avoid criminal influences on the judgement, or the matter may be a secret matter of state ?
