It's a condition known as being "P*ss-proud" (my star!), and in that state, a man cannot pass water (how polite can I get!) so, as it always happens upon awakening in the morning, it's nature's way of stopping him peeing the bed ! ! !

The answer is a genetic imperative.
There's quite a few things like this that's mainly irrelevant nowadays , but in the stone age [ish] were a survival aid.
Back then , when men went hunting , there was a finite chance they wouldn't return, so genetically its much better for them to have a possibly 'last chance' for a baby.
Physically what happens is that the testostorone level is highest as we awaken - hence the erection.
Another related genetic item is when a male is away from his mate for a few days , he will masturbate the night before so getting fresh sperm ready .
Isn't Darwinism wonderful at finding answers to some peculiarities in human life ?

I used to wonder, too. Then I read in some Men's Health book that its a natural thing - just another way the body wakes up - like its checking all the systems at the start of the day. It has nothing to do with sexual stimulation. If left to its natural course - its hard for a minute or two, then it goes soft.
This info also answered why, when I thought it was sexual and tried to initiate sex, I got "soft" within a short time.

I agree with Tom K. Men can't wiggle their bottoms or contract muscles to stop the urge to go to the toilet. So their body deals with it by getting a hard on i reckon. My partner says it's almost painfull trying to wee with a hardon.
And there's the dream option of course ...

As a guy I am also unsure. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that when you are asleep you are very relaxed and feeling really good?
I doubt it's because we dream about sex EVERY night. If that really happens then I have been missing out because I usually can't remember my dreams.
Either way, I think it's fantastic.

The human male, if he is able to achieve erection, will do so during his sleep, usually during an REM cycle. It's not uncommon for a man to wake up in the middle of a cycle with an erection. Another explanation is that, as the bladder fills over the course of the night, it puts pressure on various autonomic nerves in the area of the penis and causes an erection.

Guys get several hardons during the night it's the body's way of keeping things healthy, the morning one is probably harder due to the need to pee,

Jackie, the reason why men has a hard on in the morning is because their colon get filled with water while their asleep and because of that, when they wake up in the morning it makes their p---s hard.

It is a way to pull ourselves out of bed in the morning. It stands and watches us shave then when you go to pee you end up peeing on the ceiling. Us guys have it hard you know, quite literaly.

I don't know the biological reason for this, but it may have something to do with men having erotic dreams while sleeping.
The combination of being in a relaxed state (sleep) and dreaming might have something to do with it.
For a real educated answer, you would have to consult a medical doctor or medical text that deals with male physiology, sexual functions, and/or biological functions.
