In general, toothpastes contain several ingredients: an insoluble polishing agent, a binder, flavouring, and a liquid to give plasticity. The polishing agents most commonly used are phosphate salts such as dicalcium phosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, and insoluble sodium metaphosphate. Gum tragacanth and seaweed derivatives or cellulose derivatives are employed as binders. A wide variety of flavouring oils is used to give products a distinctive and pleasant taste; in most pastes, saccharin or cyclamate is added for sweetening, and often both are used. For liquid, almost all toothpastes employ glycerin and water. Tooth powders are essentially identical to toothpaste except that they contain no liquid and that the binder is sometimes omitted.

It's partially made up of fluoride ions. That's why when you have a slight breakage in a piece of glass (watch, glasses, etc) you can just apply toothpaste over it to fix the dents b/c the glass has silicon, which reacts w/ fluoride ions.

hi,
im not going to patronise you like the other idiots. Toothpase contains long words which i will try and break down for you. The active ingredient on the one i am looking at is sodium monofluorophosphate. This contains sodium, flourine, hydrogen, oxygen and potassium. These are chemically combined to give sodium monofluorophosphate. typing these long words in the internet should give you a chemical break down (i am not sure if it will but the internet usually can tell you everything). read the side if the tube, the ingredients are listed, or go to the website if which ever one you use.
