Hello all,
I have a 90,BMW 525i.I live in bahrain, where there is no issues on emissions and like to remove the clogged catalystic convertor.I got opinions from two mechanics(exhaust mechanics). One says we can replace the C.Convertor by two plain pipes. The other says to replace the C.Convertor by a muffler which will protect the other two mufflers in the exhaust system.
I like my car to be silent while running.Your advices are highly apprecaited.

Replaceing the catalystic converter with another converter is pointless.
If you replace the converter with plain pipes, you will not get the quiet sound that you want.
Replaceing the cat. with mufflers is deffinetly the way to go. You can get mufflers to make your engien become louder or quiter. Bolth will give you more power.

If you can find or get a replacement you need to replace the convertor.
They actually do more than lower emissions in modern systems. The entire computer system expects the convertor and relies on its presence to adjust fuel/air mixture etc for optimum performance. Check with a mechanic familiar with ALL of the engine operating systems and see what effect lack of the convertor will have on your performance. (From 1990 it may not be too bad from 1998 up it will be.)
