i currently am using the free wi-fi from a few local places, but would love to be able to pick up the signal from my home. Yea, i know it's not right, but I just can't afford it right now. Does anyone know how i can do this?

Well, picking up the signal from your home is perfectly right, as long as it is your homes signal.

Now if you are talking about STEALING wifi that is a different issue and illegal to boot.

Most home routers don't send a signal more than 400 feet or so (assuming the signal is in open air). They are designed for "local area" use.

Wifi works on a "line of sight" basis.. if you can "see it" you can probably connect to it. See it meaning there is nothing else blocking the signal like a building, a hill, etc.

Now there are systems that allow long range wifi, they use external high gain antennas mounted on radio towers, high buildings, hilltops, etc. But that is a whole different setup than what I think you are talking about. These are what WISP's supply.

an external boosting antenna may help but wi-fi is limited in transmit range

It is technically illegal to knowingly connect to an unauthorised network. I know loads of people do , but there are other free options:
