Oilless compressors do not require any compressor oil and can be operated in any position. They are typically small portable units and are fairly noisy.
Oil-lubricated compressors must be kept fairly level so that the oil can be splashed on the piston to keep it from seizing. All stationary units are oil lubricated.
The weight is similar for both types.

I'll tell you this, I use a compressor in my work almost everyday that i'm on the job. I use a lubricated compressor as the non-lubricated compressors will breakdown and leave you in a lurch 99% of the time when you least expect it. So if you are looking to buy a compressor get a lubricated one.

the difference is that a lubricated compressor has lube in it and a non lubricated compressor does not contain lube, but uses the coolant as lubricant as it passes through
