We are/were minorities who were not held back by minority status. Many of us came from poor immigrants but managed to receive higher education and a desirable occupation. How did we make this happen?

Andy - usually I would let mistaken people just get on with their lives, but I think it would behoove you to know a few things.
Blood differs from ethnicity to ethnicity. Just because the color is the same doesn't indicate that it truly is the same. The difference in blood helps us trace back the origins of humans both as a whole and according to race.
I'm American also, but I don't belong in the dominant culture. I belong to the Asian American co-culture. We have co-cultures in America, and the Asian co-culture has something that produces more successful (academically) progeny than comparable cultures; this is were the discussion lies.
It's not so much a comparison of race, but acknowledgment that minorities are capable of success without much government assistance. Asians are the proof, now how did they do this?

Asian does not = good parenting there is more to parenting then "higher education" and a "desirable occupation", how about slave driving their kids until they have nervous breakdowns and grey hair by the age of 18, I live in China and have taught English in public schools for almost ten years now and let me tell you there are stupid people in this country too, why does everyone stereo type Asian as these walking brains, the only reason we do is b/c the cream of the crop come to the USA to study, my students cry themselves to sleep at night b/c there is some much pressure to be the best, check out Asian suicide rates

notice Hot Asian... did not respond to the rest of us, just Andy, I want to point out something as well, being a minority depends simply on where you live, unless you are talking of course as the world as a whole, in the States I am not a minority, in China I am, so, please explain to me why the white minority in China is making such a HUGE impact on the country economically, intellectually and culturally? Get off your Asian high horse and come back to reality, in the USA race is everything the USA is, we are many groups and races that have come to together to make a great nation, it is people like you who divide it up into this group is better than that group, we ALL contribute in some way to this great nation, digging ditches all the way to being a CEO, it is not about YOU or your race but it is about US

That depends, what do you measure success by? There are many types of success, I wouldn't specifically claim that race is the factor that created the success. There are many successful people in every race. I think as people in society have learned more about how horrible racism is and how treating people equally has been taught over the years many more opportunities for all races have been open to all.

Values and parenting no matter what race you are is the main factor in raising successful children. I say successful by meaning that you raised loving, smart, happy, healthy, caring and inspired children. I think that is the biggest measure of success anyone would wish for. Career success should come after that. If you raise your children to only measure success based on their career and money they make, then that is not value based parenting and if there is a problem with the economy and people that base their lives only on the success they have in career and money, then there is a potential life issue that could ruin them. For example, in the tech world when the dot.coms starting going out of business, a lot of people suddenly found their careers over with and had no clue what else to do with their lives. People that grew up with values and active parents were the ones that did well even through that mess. It was because they knew the right things to value the most, and that was not just the career, but the fact that they knew there were worse things that could have happened.

I hate racism and stupid questions about one race is better than another. We are all responsible for each other. We all bleed red. We only have one planet. Study world history and don't make stupid assumptions. I could make stupid assumptions about Orientals, oh sorry, Asians, Negroes, oh sorry, Colored, oh sorry, Blacks, oh sorry African- Americans. Give me a break. I am an American. I can trace my roots back to being Irish and Catholic. Study history in this country and Irish were thought to be sub human. When John Kennedy was elected President in 1960 that was a shock. Oh my God he is catholic and will take his orders from The Vatican.

Those that perpetrate the notion that they are better than others serves no purpose. In fact it brings us all down. We should practice the idea to bring everyone up to a better level.

I disagree. Asian parents discourage many natural talents their children have. They only approve academic success. Academic success is good for some but it isn't for everyone. There are more to life than just being brainiacs

certianly anglo cultures could learn a lot from societies that maintain extended families and such but i think there is one caveat.

immigrants who came to the western nations were the motivated ones. of course tehy would succeed. just by the sheer effort involved in relocating into a different society they were the achievers. they did very well and all due credit to them, but i think it would be wrong to dissmiss the anglo tradition altogether.
