There's nothing generally wrong with it, it's just that maybe they think playing the guitar is for white people, since not that many black people play the guitar. Well in my opinion, your friends shouldn't have smirked at you like that, they should have respected you. You would be better off with other friends.

I think because we haven't, as a society, supported or encouraged black musicians more.
Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Lenny Kravitz, T Bone Walker - all fabulous.
On the flip side, there have been people like Charlie Rich. A little odd. He played the piano, sang blues, and you'd never know from his voice that he wasn't black.
Bring on the diversity and good for you! Whatever you choose to play, keep it up!

Hi, Direktor. You know, no matter what race oriented group you assign yourself to-there would be similar peer pressure related statements that will happen every now and then. It's a culture based thing, and it sucks that cultures try to constrict themselves like that.
I'm white, and I've been a fan of funk and blues music since I was a wee girl. And duh, I had a few friends that were.....not very cool with my music. I kept listening to George Clinton anyway, and they got over it.
So, have they HEARD of Jimmi Hendrix? It sounds like your friends are A)misinformed about their own culture's do's and don'ts--mind you, limiting yourself because of your race is um, ABSOLUTELY RETARDED and B) obviously not very musically intelligent.
Black guys that play electric guitar(or guitar in general) are hot. Tell them that a hot white chick said that. They can email me for verification if they need to.
Anyway, if you want to be a rocker-get used to some people trying to hold you down. In the end, it'll just make your sound even more awesome. Just builds your character, man.
Just like with anything else you might get into, I'll give you a piece of advice. Be cool, shrug, and learn some witty comebacks. Your friends will get over it as long as you don't make it a big deal. And if they do? Then, well, they are lame and probably Enya-fans. Big, going-nowhere punks.

I see no problems, unless you are planning to go into gloomy, doomy, black metal. That corpse paint makes me giggle even on white people. And as several have already pointed out, Jimi Hendrix was a guitar god. It's probably just weird because metal/hard rock has turned into a stereotypically white genre, much like hip hop is a black one. And we have white rappers, don't we?

There's nothing I hate more than people slating other people who do what they want to do. If they are your true friends they wouldn't smirk. There's nothing wrong with liking how guitars sound. Imagine if one day you became famous, then you could smirk right back at them! Rock On!

Absolutely nothing!
Please understand that even if you have to stand alone for a while you will be so rewarded in not only self-esteem but also by gaining respect from the type of people that are capable of lifetime meaningful relationships.
You are valuable and should not surround yourself with those who do not encourage the things interesting to you.
In sacrificing your "friends" approval (even though you you might feel terribly alone for awhile) I assure you... you will be storing up a future with real friends who really care.
please learn to stand alone... ironically, it will naturally make others want to be with you
good luck...
(PS for some unexplainable reason I feel that your future Willl be for serving Christ and that it wil benefit many)
God Bless You.
