Some people say that anyone can pretend to play a guitar and scream over a microphone. Others say that anyone can simply talk over a beat. These are both caricatures because rap and rock involve much more skill and creativity than simply screaming over a microphone or rhyming over a beat. As a listener of both, my impression is that rap demands more creativity in the studio but rock demands more skill on stage. What do others think about it?

Please I would appreciate answers from people who like both types of music, not ignorant people who say things like "rock is gay" or "rap isn't music". I know for a fact that both have crappy songs (which are the majority) but both also produce some awesome songs.

Work aholic, you can't really say that because I've heard a lot of rap songs that have creative background music. So it's not "just about the lyrics".

Jared_leto, that's just one form of it (which is marketed the most). And I agree it's stupid.

maestrod, I think you've got the wrong type of rap songs in mind. You've probably being listening only to the modern watered down mainstream version. Most of the good rap songs I've heard have a lot of harmony and melody in them that is NOT easily reproduced. If you like snoop dogg (for example) you ought to know that from his early 90's stuff. But there are lots of others that you are just not aware of that are far better than that one.

I'm with you on the fact that both can have really good songs. However, I really think that rap demands more creativity, because everything is so freestyle and you can do basically anything. Rock also needs a lot, I just think rap needs more.

I hate Rap. But I do believe both can be just as easy or as hard as the other. If I could put lyrics over a beat and it was that Easy, I would have an Album right now. I don't. It ain't as easy as it looks. But, I am a fan of Rock. It ain't easy either. Have you ever tried to write music? It ain't easy. I have Lyrics for stuff. It is trying to set it to the right style. Is it a Driving Beat or a Soft Melody. I do Think Rock is a bit more Complicated to do. But That is only my opinion.

I know you wanted people who liked both. But As a musician myself, I do understand the Effort put in to both types. I just happen to Hate Rap and Love Rock. But I can Stay Unbiased if I must.

Rock, because it is a type of music. In world war 2 there was a hit song called the boogie woogie bugle boy of company B this became a hit again when it was covered by Bette Midler. Rap is essentially this song, but the rapper makes up his own rhyming words, and the music is replaced by electronic percussion, so it sounds like you are listening to an African American talking in a noisy factory.

Both but a little bit more rock. Rappers need to find more creativity because they usually repeat the same things and they need to find old school songs to rap over to, I don't like that.
With rock, there's a little bit more feeling. And they try to come up with different music. Its hard to tell because most of the punk singers sound a lot alike.

Music is, by definition, an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.
Rap has only rhythm, and any melody (never any harmony) or color is easily reproduced and recreated.
Rock has rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Most of these aspects, in context to the song, take time to master each skill, and take talent to reproduce correctly.
It takes musical skill to compliment ALL aspects of music into a song, not just lyrics or a pre-set beatbox.

It is true that both have a fantastic amount of songs that bring each genre to a level of superb musicality. So generalizing won't necessarily work for your question.

However, rap, predominantly, demands skill ONLY in lyricism, and they barely get by with that. Rock, predominantly, demands skill not only in lyricism, but also voice leading, chord progression, instrumental talent, etc.

But ultimately, musical opinion differs for everyone. I, personally, enjoy rock, and despise rap... except Snoop Dogg. lol :)

lyrically, i think rap needs more creativity because it is the only thing to it. But musically, rock needs more creativity because everyone listens to it because the music not as much as the singer is good
