Sorry is hard because it makes us vulnerable in a way nothing else ever will. In this day and age our society has made saying you are wrong a weak and sneer-worthy thing. We all have to be the best, the smartest, the richest, the sexiest, people go into huge debt, put plastic in and on their bodies, lie and cheat and steal to keep up a facade of the super-perfect person. To admit you are wrong is to put a chink in that facade and to show your true self. On the other hand this is the same society that cheapens other beautful things like sex and love to transactions between people that are nothing more than motions and hollow acts.
I believe that to admit you are wrong is to show the person you wronged that they are more important to you than that facade. That you aren't going to let something stand between the two of you, even if it means that you will come out looking like less than the other person. However, I have found that usually the person that you have asked for forgiveness from thinks more of you for your apology rather than less.

I read recently about a study that found that 'Sorry' is the most over-used word in the English language. We use it in lots of situations, for example, if you can't hear what a person is saying, if you bump in to someone on the street, if you want to get someone's attention etc. I think it's meaning has become diluted since we use the word for so many diverse purposes. Perhaps that's why we avoid using it when we really should.
