Long slow process, start by reading up on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) then apply your new knowledge to your site and eventually submit your site to as many search engines as you can find. Try to get other sites to link to you, get your Google sitemap, use the right keywords, the list just goes on and on......

exactly as MIKE C says and you can also use links popularity this helps with your ranking on the search engines. the more links you have to your website on other websites, the higher you rank

by the way.. its a nice start advertising it on yahoo questions.. ahahaha... i made a site long ago for my girl friend and then started by consulting her friends and cousins if it was already good... for your site, try to ask samples of your target people if the site would be ok or if it still nids improvements.. try to know what sector is ur target.. like religious sectors... or students.. teachers.. singles... then if they agreed... try this.. a almost did this, but my girlfriend and i broke up .. so didnt push through.. try advertising your site on your shirt.. on your bag.. on your notebuk or anything else... that would quite make people curious...
