infact what buffoon decided that cat/dog, was a good name.... I think that purrmiaowlick is a far better descriptive name for a cat, and headroundtailend works for dogs. What other names should be given to things, that don't work for what they are...

same reason as a house is called a house and you are called an idiot for asking such questions, names eveloved slowly from when people began to talk, and eventually came to what they are today, don't forget, a cat is a chat in French, a Gatto in Spanish. Every language evolved differently, although some took words from one language into their own, like English took the Indian word bungalow

Because cat means a small furry thing that likes to chase mice, and dog means a larger furry thing that likes to chase cats. It's just the way the world is. Deal.

It is because of the same reason why elephants are called elephants and lions are called lions.
The Moon is also called moon and the sun is also called sun.
They have a name to avoid people being confused and inventing more names in the future.
