I can not decide between the following careers! I am 32 and have been working in IT which I am trying to escape to do something more caring. I am willing to go back to university in fact I would like that very much and these are my ideas: Veterinary Nursing, Adult Nursing, Psychologist, Adult Teacher (I did some before and liked it) or Physiotherapy. Basically I really want to do something really worthwhile where I can make a difference. I have done some work experience as a Veterinary Nurse and practised First Aid for a number of years. I also have done Adult teaching and it was good whilst I actually got to teach! I think I would also be good at Psychology as I have first hand experience of depression/anxiety and really feel I could use that insight well. I also Physio would be very rewarding helping people to become mobile again. How do I choose between these areas and really find what I was meant to do? Serious answers only please thanks for your help.

Keep in mind that to train to be a psychologist will take three years undergraduate degree, one year masters and three years PhD. There is a LOT of cost involved in this and so it may not be practical in the long run..

something like Vetinary nursing still takes a fair bit of time to study, but you can work in the environment whist you are studying and may be able to get some training or sponsership through the people you work for so you wont have to pay your fees..

there is always demand for adult nursing so this could be a good idea and physiotherapy could take a while to study or you could train through evening courses.

If you want to use your experience of depression/anxiety, I would suggest you look into a diploma in counselling perhaps? Psychology deals a lot more in the biological side of mental disorders and is a good course but the undergraduate degree wont get you into the profession on its own... you will need further study and this does cost.

There are diplomas in counselling (in UK) that are more willing to take people with life experience rather than academic qualifications and it is often a career that people go into later in life to share their wisdom. If you go into a course accredited by the BACP (British Association of counselling and Psychotherapy) then you can begin practicing after the course is finished.

I am about to start a two year diploma in person centred counselling.. although it is classed as a full time course they only teach two days each week allowing for part time jobs during the study, so this is a good one if you have other commitments whist you are studying.

Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

Firstly congratulations on doing something that all of us say we may do, but because of the financial side of things never do. Personally there really are only two choices for me, Veterinary or Adult Nurse. Animals can't help themselves and a good vet is actually difficult to find, helping animals is, I imagine, incredibly fulfilling and you will go home at night with a feeling of satisfaction. Again the same with nursing, 99% of the people you see will want your help and be incredibly grateful. Nurses are completely underrated and without them the NHS would completely fall apart. Again you will come home with a sense of satisfaction of actually acheiving something. How many other people can say that something they did contributed to saving someone's life?

I can see you're quite challenged by this. I had a similar choice to make recently but fortunately I didn't have as many choices as you do.
You mention the areas you have had experience in, but the only one you have expressed really positive feelings about is adult teaching. maybe this is the step you need to investigate first. It sounds like you are a very caring person so whaever line you choose you will be successful. Good luck

I think you have lots of things to do in your life, its better for you to list it out and makes plan on yourself. We cant do it for you. You yourself have to make your own plan, so if you make mistake its not ours fault. Another thing is your time is running out.
