If you're on highest rate of the mobility component, you can get a car in place of the cash.
DLA is divided into care & mobiltiy components. Care component comes in low, medium & high rates. Mobility in low & high. You don't get help with transport costs if you only get the care component.

Hope this helps. If you're having trouble with the bureaucrats, speak to your local Citizens Advice Bureau, who should be able to help.

There are 2 main components for DLA, which are for Care and Mobility needs.
Motability Cars:
Typically you need to have been assessed as needing the Higher Level for mobility and for the award to last 3 or more years. If you get this, you can sign up for a 3 year agreement with Motability, a separate organisation to the DSS.
Motability provide purchase or rental options for vehicles, and all of your Mobility allowance would be paid direct to them each month, for the full duration of the deal.
I have a friend with severe MS and she was pepetually being assessed as needing lower rate, and she was only being awarded for 2 years at a time. This stopped her getting the motability deal. She eventually went to appeals tribunal and got a lifetime High Mobility rate allowance and went on to get a car. People with terminal illnesses, and just a short life expectancy, can also be helped by motability.
DLA is a tricky thing to get, the forms are really tough and assessments seem a little harsh, especially if someone has severe restrictions on what they could ever achieve for personal mobility.
You are also entitled to the higher rate mobility if you are severely mentally impaired with behavioural problems and get the highest rate of DLA for your care needs.
Citizens' Advice Bureau have experts that will help with the application or appeals process, if you think a judgement is not correct. They are really good and have helped many people that I know. Just a wrong word or two, or not going into full explicit details of how your condition affects you, can result in claims rejection or wrong categorisation. I recommend help from them or a similar body with expertise.
Good luck! Rob

If you are on the highest rate of mobility allowance then you can claim for a car through the Motability scheme. But you have to use the money from your allowance to pay for it. You don't get both like a lot of people presume.
If you don't want to forfeit your allowance , then you can still get car tax allowance plus a disabled parking card.

You can apply for the yearly car tax where you dont have to pay. you got to apply to the dss for a proof of claim and you take that with other car forms to claim your free tax at your local general post office.
AND if you have no car and your in receipt of DLA you can also claim for a free bus pass although its only valid from 9.30am-3.29pm to 6.00pm onwards.
hope this helps and good luck.
or failing that you can have money taken from youtr DLA each month towards the price of a car though it works out dearer this way and i think you have to be getting at least the middle rate to be eligible.
