just go to network neighbour hood of u'r computer then click network connections it will show u'r connection whatever it is like lan1 or whatever just right click on the connection and click enable tab and it simply enable u'r network connection
and as far as Ethernet is concerned
it is media access control protocol and use csma/cd protocol
which is carrier sence multiple access/collision detection
all the end nodes in ethernet are idetified by 6 bytes unique address which is called MAC adress first three bytes represents the vendor and last three byte is unique to every nodes thats it ita has a wast theory to define but i think its enough for u'r knowledge

You should probably look up the brand of the dsl/cable modem you have on the internet to see exactly how.

If you have the software for that modem installed on your computer try pressing Start then go to Control Panel, and click on Network Connections. The internet connection for your ethernet may be there, try right clicking it and clicking Enable.

Hope this helps.

Download and run Belarc advisor found at http://www.belarc.com
That will give you the name and model of the Ethernet card so you can download the current drivers for it
