In a modern fuel-injected computer-controlled-ignition car, there isn't much you can do to tune it up except make sure the spark plugs are clean and properly gapped and the wires are in good shape. Even then, that only has to be done every 100,000 miles or so. Maybe adjust the valve lash, but that's another 100,000 mile procedure and won't make a very noticeable difference.

In older cars, you could set the ignition timing by turning the distributor, set the dwell angle by adjusting the points, adjust the carburettor fuel mixture, idle, and jets. You would need to get detailed instructions from something like a Haynes manual for your car.

There are a number of things that can contribute to engine vibration and noise.

The best advice I can give you is to go to your local auto parts store and buy a Haynes or Chiltons manual on your vehicle. These manuals can help you diagnose, repair, and prevent almost any problem you might have. Remember, though, that there is absolutely no substitution for a decent mechanic.

See my sources for more info on Haynes and Chiltons manuals.

Good luck!

Ok, you 1st need to explain what kind of car you are trying to "tune". Most newer vehicles have computerized or electronic ignitions, were made after 1975. Prior to 1975 they utilized points and condensers and carburetors. Fuel injection became more popular in the 90's. So moe info you provide, then the easier it will become for me to answer your question more precise.

You need to change the plugs and wires, get a new distributor cap, adjust the timing which is crucial to a smooth running vehicle, and change the fuel filter and air filter. Changing those items should make her purr like a kitten provided nothing is wrong with it.
