Many libraries will take books, if they can't use them they will sell them for a $! or so. These can be put in the library bin if you can't get there when it is open.. NO pornography Please
DR office's like the most current magazines for their waiting room NO pornography Please. Put them in a plastic bag and hang on the door knob.
Any books that are of interest to females can be left at most beauty salons. NO pornography Please
If you have a book swap in town they will take most hard cover and softcover books in fairly good condition and give you a voucher to use toward the purchase of another book.
Hospital waiting rooms always take magazines that are fairly up to date. NO pornography Please
CAUTION...any magazines or books should have your name and address removed

Bring them to a used bookstore. The magazines, it depends. If it's old Rolling Stones or MAD try bringing them to a comic book store. But if they are recent then they are probably garbage.

charity shops are always looking for books if they're in okish condition - magazines can be put into a paper-recycling bin (which can be found at your local tip).
