Uhh...there's an electrically controlled solenoid that opens/closes a valve on both hot and cold water inlets.
Get it?
Kinda like the ones on automatic sprinklers....?

The connections themselves are still wide open. There are solenoid controlled valves in the washing machine that open when the unit calls for water.

(The solenoid valve is held shut by a spring. Electricity is used to force it open past the spring when it is filling or rinsing. If the power fails the springs snap the water lines shut again - like a fail safe.)
