I loved it! I used to say GLADIATOR was my favorite film but I just saw 300 last weekend and I was totally blown away! What an awesome movie! I was fascinated every minute! The script, the costumes and sets, the music, everything was just PERFECT!!!
I was most impressed by the action scenes, they were choreographed very nicely and looked pretty realistic. (OK, OK, the arterial spurt was wrong, there wasn't enough gushing blood and no sword, no matter how sharp, stays sharp long enough for you to hack that many people to death but let's overlook little details like that, OK?)
I own swords and I know it's not easy to swing those babies for long, you really have to be in good shape and these guys really looked it! Like real warriors not the weekend warrior type. I mean, you could believe that they'd been training as warriors since they were kids.
OK, there was some gratuitous nudity (young "oracle" in flimsy gown, the Queen of Sparta flashing flesh, the king and queen in the bedchamber) to keep the young, testosterone laden men interested until the carnage but I guess that's only fair as we women were treated to the sight of all these buff guys in skimpy war outfits.
The bad guys were suitably bad, LOL! It cracks me up to see the people posting here at YA that are saying it's an anti-Iranian film or whatever. It's fiction for Pete's sake and it's a good story!! Ah, it was just a spectacular feast for the eyes in many respects and was very inspiring. No doubt I'll go see it again while it's still in the theaters and immediately snap up a copy when it comes out on DVD!
No question, 300 is the best movie of 2007 so far. I've seen several: WILD HOGS, 23, GHOST RIDER, CATCH & RELEASE, MUSIC & LYRICS.... um, some horror flick whose name I can't even remember now... in fact, several movies that I can't name now because they were so mundane but 300 is awesome! Both my boyfriend and I loved it!

Well, if it's angered the Iranians (and it doesn't take much, these days) I hope it's a success. The original story was not a comic book creation. The basic event did happen. Naturally enough, Hollywood has always liked to change history - what's the phrase - 'never let the facts get in the way of a good story - to suit themselves so I suppose with computer animation the film will be visually entertaining.

There is no doubt that the movie is shot perfectly...because of its director. But there are certain points in other answers that must be clarified:
Yes there was a battle Thermopylae, but not with a million Persian soldiers in it!!! Iran's population couldn't reach a million at that time!!! Iranians were not merciless, Go read about Cyrus the great or any other Persian king (not emperors, cause Persians have no emperors).
Now, one of the answers said that Persians cry all the time a movie comes out and then compared them with Nazi Germany...mate they did not kill every soul on their path, they didn't kill people because of being a Jew or a Christian. They never made people obey them. So the Germans (I mean Nazi Germany) are portrayed for real unlike Persians it’s like you make a Nelson Mandela and show him as a super villain!
If you want to know about the true history, based on western books, just go and read the book: Greeks and the barbarians.

Actually, despite of what the others have responded. The movie 300 was actually a true story. Before you make any comments, you should check history books on the matter.
King Leonidas of Sparta in 480 BC. did in fact stop about more than 200,000 Persian at the battle of Thermopylae. If you don't believe me, you can check on line on the history web site. Everything mentioned in the movie about their practices regarding their lifestyle was true. The Spartans were a warrier society, even the women. I didn't particularly like the movie how it was told, but as far as accurate it was. This has nothing to do with Iran. Check the history books.
As a matter of fact, it was previewed on the History channel on cable this week.

Best movie of the year.
It's entertainment, people. Not meant to be taken as 100% accurate. The director even said that if anyone else wants to make their own version, they can go right ahead.
If people are that upset, they are taking things way too seriously which is not healthy. Iranians were not even around back then and Persia has long since disappeared so it is silly to get upset over something that happened over 2000 yrs ago that no one can change. The story was told from a Spartan view so naturally the Persians will be portrayed as villians. That's how films work.

I would like to applaud Frank Miller for a very entertaining film from start to finish. I love the cinematography, the dialogues, the costumes (so grandiose) and the action most of all. Sure I like 6-pack abs but being a fan of combat sports, I'm more into the form when it comes to the fight scenes.
I'm concerned though that the modern day Persians will react differently to the movie after all they were portrayed as the villains extraordinaire.

The whole "fighting for freedom against tyranny" theme was definitely emphasized, but I think the negative portrayal of the Persians was primarily to add to the effect of the movie, and not to make any particular statement. However, these things are difficult to ignore considering the current state of politics.

I cant wait to see it - its released on the 22nd in the UK.
I read the Frank Miller Graphic novel years ago.
As for the Persians or the Greeks - neither of them were redeemable characters - the Spartans lived & bred for war - the Persians were a one in a long line of empire builders & decadence was part of that whole gig.
So - its there not as a piece of historical fact - but as a dramatised (or "hollywood")account of a romantacised battle - its there to enjoy - not to get in a twist over
so just chill & enjoi!!

film versions of history are always over glorified
