In my case the cable co. laid cables under all the pavements with a terminal box underground for each property. For each person who decided to get connected the cable firm laid a cable from the terminal box to the front of the house. In my case they laid it under the front lawn. A terminal box is fitted to the outside of the wall and the cable is passed through the wall to an internal box,in my case they used a ventilator brick to get the cable through, but otherwise they drill a hole. From the interior box(fitted to the wall just under the window and well out of the way)a cable , fairly thick is taken round the edge of the room to where the T.V.is placed and connected to the cable co. digibox for all your TV. A smaller cable is fed to a standard telephone socket which can be any where you like ,including an extension to your kitchen, bedroom or whatever. The only problem I had was with broadband for my PC. I didn't want a cable running to the far end of my lounge as it would have to cross a fireplace and look unsightly so I had a wireless router fitted . The router and modem are fitted to the interior of the front wall adjacent to the cable entry box and phone connector and with a settee in front you would not know they were there. I find it all quite satisfactory.

There's always been a battle between cable comms and wireless comms, from a small beach in cornwall the foundations for modern cables stretched across the world, then i think marconi introduced wireless comms, cable is more secure and trusted. We just had the wire installed, the street was already wird so they went from the junction box to the house, i have seen little green boxes like little substations, also they overheat in summer and can effect the network.

outside you have a plastic tube about size of hose pipe. this is where the cable runs through.
On the outside of your house will be a box the cable is attached to this. a hole is drilled through your house wall and then another box is fitted then the cable runs out of that.
This box on the inside of your house is where your tv phone and broadband run from.
Depending on which of the services you have will depend on how many cables you will have.
the phone cable is the same size as a phone cable
the cable is the same size as an outdoor areial wire.

The cable will be dug underground to your house, then they drill through the wall for it to come into the house. All the wires you need for your TV, Broadband and Phone will be inside the cable, its very neatly done and they don't make a mess. That's how they did it at my home.

The cable company 'buy' channels from the broadcasters, they have buildings with satellite dishes on them to receive the channels. The signal is then scrambled and is distributed on a network of fibre optic cables. These cables go to a central point in each area called a node (a large green cabinet), the signal is then tidied up and distributed to a series of distribution amplifiers (medium size green cabinet) which is then distributed to a series of distribution points (small green cabinet). A cable the size of a tv aerial cable is then connected from a point in the small green cabinet to a small box on the outside of your house where the signal is again 'tidied up' and a cable is then connected from this small box to each of your set top boxes.
Hope this helps
