ok so i was looking at my fish last night, when i noticed some tiny tiny tiny white spots on the two blue platies an the mollie. all three fish are silver in colour and the white spots are only on there tails, they really are tiny. i cant notice any on my other fish. the one blue platie is pregnant. im really worried as ive read so many questions about ick!!! ive only had my tank set up for about 3weeks and ive only had the fish for one week! all the fish seem to be sound, eating well and swiming well. so if it is ick then y? wot caurses it? is it b'cuz i need to clean my tank? my tank doesnt look dirty at all. will my fish die? wot shall i treat it with? say i treat them for ick and it turns out not to be will the medication kill them? will my platies babys be ok? sorry to ask alot of questions but im really new to all this, and really dont want to lose any of my fish.
thanks in advance

Ich is really very harmless if treated properly. I have 13 tanks and have had my share of ich in the past years, but I haven't lost a single fish to it out of dozens and dozens who have had it. You only lose fish to ich when they are already unhealthy. Unfortunately for you, your fish are new and won't be up to par with health yet. Just buy your medicine and use it properly and also add a little aquarium salt to the water.

I would get some medication specifically for ick, and make sure you do exactly what the directions say. The most important thing is to keep treating for the required length of time, even if the white spots go away. Ick has different stages and not all are visible to the naked eye. That's probably why you're just seeing the spots now...they already had it when you brought them home. One other thing is when you add new fish to the tank, DON'T add the water they came in.

ALL FISH HAVE ICK. Ick comes out when fish are stressed. The slime coating of fish deteriates and the Ick penetrate the fish. Bad water main cause of stress and addition of other fish. Water doesnt have to look dirty to be dirty. You have anew tank Syndrome. High levels of Nitrie, Nitrate, Amonia. You overloaded the Bacterial filter to much waste do a 50% water change and get some Amonia pads andor charcoal with amonia pellets . Now you can always have copper in your water wich kills all parasites but only have this is a fish only set up. Water change now 50% 2 Days 25% and then 2 days 25% and then 10% every 7 days.

Hi,
No, your fish will not die if you treat them properly. It sounds like ICH. I would suggest that before you add any medicine try the following steps.

1. Do a 75% water change. But make sure that the new water is at the same temperature as the aquarium water and that it is chorine free.

2. Then add rocksalt to the aquarium ( 1 tsp. per 5 gallon of water).

3. Increase aeration in the aquarium by using airstone.

4. Gradually raise the water temperature to 85F. But raise it slowly in steps in couple of hours.

5. I wouldn't suggest using the ICH medication avaible in store untill the condition is very serious. Because Ich medicine is really really toxic and contains a suspected carcinogen (can theoretically cause cancer).

6. Also switch off aquarium lights.

7. Continue this treatment till all spots disappear and add another day.

8. Remember to treat your nets and all other equipment.

I hope you fish will be fine in 3-4 days.

best of luck
Aman

It is probably ICK. the fish may have already had it in the pet store just not in the stage where it is visible to the eye. Treat the tank anyway and set up another tank without gravel for the fry (name for fishy babies) and as soon as they are born transfer them to the new tank. Be sure to use a sponge filter or to cover the filter intake with panty hose so they ndont get sucked up into it! There are many way to treat ICK either use a combo of One Tablespoon of salt for every ten gallons and raise the temp to 79-80 ish OR use methelyne blue or Malchite green to treat the tank 5 ML(one teaspoon) for every 5 gallons

I would first do a 20% water change and use a water conditioner that will help with slime coat. Depending on the size of the tank...say 10 gal. I would use like 3-5 pinches of aquarium salt as it will help with killing it. I wouldn't guess ick due to the fact that it is a newly set tank and probably the fish are going through the stress of it not being cycled. I would guess more like fungus from the stress and what not. I would double check the spots and see if they look like grains of salt or if they look more like fuzzy little patches. If patches it's stress related to their move. Remember any meds can compromise their immune systems so I wouldn't medicate till you are sure that is what you have.

Sounds like Ick.. you can get meds at most places that sell fish supplies.. the meds will make the water turn blue for about 30 minutes.. re treat in about a week.

Definitely Ick. Go to your local store (Wal-Mart, Walgreens) and they will have some Ick medication. Be sure to follow the directions VERY carefully because too much can kill all of the fish.
