Naxalite movement had its origin in the suppression of the unprivileged section of the society at the time when it started in Naxlawari. I think at that time the revolt was fair considering ground situation. But over the time this so called movement had grown to be a menace for the civilized society.
There are, I suppose, main reasons for the continuation and aggressive agenda of this menace..
1) Man Power availability
The people should be educated so that they can be responsible citizens. the media should propagated the improving situation and the work being done by various agencies on the priority basis.
2) Logistics
The security agencies should take enough measures to cut short the supply lines. Media can play a role of the critical information provider and propagator of the achievements to masses.
3) People support
This is critical. There are areas from where these groups draw support. They may be influential parties (including some power hungry politicians), general public or others. Media should try to expose those politicians and should play a proactive role in educating the general public about the realities.
4) Safe heavens
These are the areas which are very remote and inaccessible in the rural India. These areas should be connected to the main stream. Media has a larger role to play here
5) Others
The main cause for the continuation of the so called movement is that these groups don't want to give up the mineral rich belt which is one of the financial resource and the plank for the power.
The role of the media can be very effective provided along with the media, the gov't machinery should try to improve the ground situation with honesty (not just to do paper work that I think is being done most of the time)
In conclusion, If Indian media woke up from the sensationalism then it has big stake in the eradicating the menace from the soil and help to realize a dream of free and fair democracy.

It is unlikely that the media can do anything about the Naxal menace that has plagued our country for decades.
We should know better than to expect anything from the media that is busy covering the Nayar-Hurley wedding and the like. Though it is absurd to rubbish the media altogether, it is true that fine journalism is becoming a rarity.
A more concrete method to tackle the Naxal menace would be to educate the Indian masses and make them understand that the Naxalites are nothing but terrorists. By creating more job opportunities for rural India we can strike at the very root of the Naxal recruitment programme.

Media can not be used as a weapon by some out side force. It is a potential weapon of the society to generate correct public opinion and when it comes to the brutal behaviour of Naxalites under the new garb of Maoists as told by Ashok above, the media has to play its assigned role to educate the public.

Naxalite Movement is a well planned underground Maoist extremist conspiracy to grab power through undemocratic means by armed struggle against their targeted 'class enemies'. From 2004 the two outfits called PWG and MCC have joined together to form CPI (Maoist) with a present cadre strength of 10,000 well trained killers with access to 9000 sophisticated fire arms. Their strategy is no longer confined to killing individual targets. It has grown into a sort of 'Civil war' which will spill more blood of innocent villagers and security personnel. As on date, it has entry into 164 Districts spread over 14 States in the country.
They might target Judges, Parliamentarians and honest Civil Servants to terrorise public and gradually shift the public allegiance to their Organisation from that to the government.
They would start collecting taxes from the public.
They might as well hold Peoples Court and award penalties including death penalty.
As you have suggested, the media can play a pivotal role by giving wide publicity to their brutality, so that the general public resist the Maoists with equal strength. The electronic media in rural ares are more important than the urban areas, so far as the Maoist menace is concerned.

YES PARVEEN YOU ARE QUIT RIGHT. MANY PROBLEMS WE CAN SOLVE THROUGH THE MEDIA THOUGH IT IS PRINT OR ELECTRONIC. SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE ARE GIVEN EXTRA POPULARITY THROUGH MEDIA. THE OTHER WAY TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM IS EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT IN THESE AREA. DEVELOPMENT OF THESE AREA IS BADLY REQUIRED. PEOPLE LIVING UNDER POVERTY LINE ARE THE MEMBERS OF SUCH GROUP. GOVERNMENT MUST CARE THE DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT.

The most essential thing is to understand their problems.
Mind it nobody likes to risk own life, and also threatens others, unless there are grievances. If you are able to win hearts and minds of naxalists, you can solve the problem. You should be able to make them understand what is right and what is wrong.mere propaganda and using force can never help.
