Hi, hope you guys can help me....I'll be visiting Kuala Lumpur and Bali soon...just wanna ask where better to exhange your money? airport? or money exchange downtown area? When I was in Hongkong, I changed my dollars at the airport and a local told me to change my money to money exchange establishments rather than the airport cuz they charge too high (or something like that!).... Should I do the same when I get to Bali and KL? Your answer will be appreciated greatly!

No much worries in Malaysia (KL)...I've lived there for 2.5 years until last December and it's pretty safe to change currency...most malls have more than one money changer and you can find a good rate, although the difference will be small from one to another. Just don't bring much cash...credit cards are accepted anywhere and is safer as well!
For Bali, been there only once in April 2005. There you should be carefull...my feeling was that everytime I tried to change some cash I was being robbed because they want to charge all different rates and fees...I ended up getting some money out of an ATM machine
Good luck and have fun!

the airport is okay, if you are not really sure, then go to the nearest bank. if you do not trust the money exchange in the downtown area, then try to avoid them. Just make sure you know the exchange rates for the day. the rate is normally posted in the bank, airport or even in the money exchange shops. Yes the airport may charge higher, but I guess, it is better to be charged higher than being ripped off someone in the downtown area.

i was in KL this past June and i got better rates at hotel or money exchange than at the airport. I recommend changing small amounts at the time because you will find better deals as you go around the city and it is also safer than carrying large amounts of cash with you. Have a good trip

There are so much the authorised money changer in Bali, you can choose the one. Or if you want to get the best rate you can change your USD in Bank Mandiri, Bank BRI, both of them is government bank. They have so much branch office around in Bali. Never change your USD in Hotels too. because they will not give you the good rate. Have a niece holliday in Bali.
