Why was R Lee Ermey off of The History Channel show "Mail Call" for over a year?

For the last year it has been nothing but reruns, but they are advertising his return in commercials. I'm just wondering why he was gone so long. I heard that he might have been in legal trouble or been removed because of political views on the Iraq war, what's the real story?

...The Gunny is back !!! I heard he was being treated for some medical problem but he's Ok now.... Whoooo Rah !

If i remember correctly he said that he Had some medical issues to take care of but now he is back on .
