Do you have any books that you yourself enjoyed as a 12 yr old? Maybe you could use your enthusiasm for a treasured story to inspire him. Or if he has certain movies he loves, there's always book versions...once he reads the book version and discovers that the mind is a much better cinematographer than the average movie-maker, hopefully he'll develop a life-long love of books as a pleasure, not as a burden!

Is there a subject he really likes? If so, find a fun book about that subject. Is he into skateboarding? Try "Dropping in with Andy Mac", it's an autobiography about Andy MacDonald, who is a clean-cut skateboarder. Or if he seems to be interested in something science-y, even find a book on that subject - but a fun book (nothing that seems too much like school). If he like snakes, he can go to a library and find books on even just one kind of snake, such as copperheads or vipers.
If he is intimidated by long books, try shorter books. There is good fiction as well for that age that is not too long. There is nothing that says he has to read "classics", either. Just try some popular fiction. I don't know about his reading level. He might want to try Jack Gantos books, for instance, or if he would like humorous books, Gordon Korman books are good - such as "No More Dead Dogs". I love this book because it makes such a point that there are a lot of dead dog stories, and sometimes enough is enough.
I hope this helps!

Take your son to a departmental store where they have wide range of books (like Crossword) and make him choose the book he wants to read. After a couple of visits,he will definately become an avid reader. You can also get him a membership of British Council Liabrary.Because of the ambience, he will surely develop an interest towards reading books.

Let him see YOU reading recreationally. Children learn by example. How many books do you read? Does he see you reading? Does he hear you talking about books? If books have value to you, they will in turn be seen as valuable to him. If you don't read and spend your time watching TV or on the computer, then in turn he will do the same.
Take a trip to the Borders. Spend the afternoon there. Get coffee and a danish and sit at the counter talking to people about the books they are reading. Find out when authors are going to be doing book signings and let him see people EXCITED about books. Go to a book fair. You have to show him positive experiences if you want he to take to it.

Don't force him but you can give him books that he enjoys like if he loves sport give him an autobiography of his favourite sport star. If he likes dark fantasy books give him any book by Garth NIx or Stephen King. Maybe start out with smaller book so he does't get bored and eventually he will be reading non stop. Most people don't read a lot anymore but that's because they don't try. Hope this helps!!!!

Friend,
This is what is happening with most of the students. You can even generalise the question. How to get our youth into reading habit?
Parents at the early ages of children do not bother. They don't have time in this seemingly mechanical world.(If they will, they have time please). So, they are worried only about their children going up from one class to upper class. As long as the children are getting good marks and passing in the examinations, they are happy and are even proud of them.
The Reading habit opens the mind's eye.Their knowledge improves, their vocabulary improves, their way of expression improves, their grammar improves and on the whole the TOTAL PERSONALITY CHANGES in an EXCELLENT WAY..
There are wonderful books for all ages.So it s the primary responsibility of all parents and teachers at school to inculcate this habit of Reading Books , by telling them an interesting story and makng them anxious to know what happened next.Tell them to read for finding the balance story.Help them in case they really need to be helped.
Panchatantram is a book that has in it every facet of life explained in an interesting way.
Robinson Crusoe.Gulliver's travels are books for childen as well as adults.
Introduce them by telling stories from our epics MahaBharata,Bhagavatam,Ramayanam etc.Make them interested first.
First the parents shall have this reading habit. Now a days this is missing. We are addicted to hearing....Radio or TV for NEWS, CD players for music, and audio books even arrived to make things worse.
There are classics in every literature. But how many read them?
I read once'' A classic is a BOOK THAT EVERY BODY WANTS TO READ BUT NOBODY READS.''
That's the position or situation.
So make them interested.Give them good books that are readable at their age.Give them a cocise dictionary.Make them learn usage of Dictionary.Help them , in case they need.
Cultivate the habit your self too.You can be an example to them.
Tell them repeatedly the benefits of good reading.Encourage them, with presenting with very good books whenever they do a good thing.
This way probably you may make the change come through, though slowly.be patient .Definitely there will be positive result.
Wishing you all GOOD LUCK.

Give him books on subjects that interest him. Most boys like adventure books. A classic like "Treasure Island" wouldn't be a bad place to start.
