The very first reality tv shows, were all those game shows from the fifties and sixties. There have always been live cooking shows as well. Shows such as This is Your life and Candid Camera were also reality based shows.

"Nummer 28" was a Dutch show very similar to MTV's "The Real World" that debuted several months before MTV's show. It's probably the first recognizable modern reality show.
