I would strongly urge you to definitely wait a while before choosing Vista.
If you can't say exactly why you need it now ... odds are that you don't.
Windows XP Pro Media Center Edition would be an excellent choice. Service pack 2 has been out for a while & along with its extensive multimedia capabilities it is as solid as it gets (for Microsoft) at the present time.
Latest VISTA review from Zdnet:
"Windows Vista: 5/8
I was tempted to punt and put in a question mark, because this sort of rating won’t really be valid until two or three more years pass.
But in two years of beta-testing I think I’ve seen enough to make some preliminary judgements.
The 5 is for businesses, the 8 is for enthusiasts.
Vista is a solid platform with plenty of rough edges (UAC, anyone?) and its ecosystem needs another few months at least to catch up with it.
At this point in its development its much like Windows 95 in its early days.
Businesses are wise to take their time. Digital media enthusiasts have a lot to love.
And if Microsoft is smart they’ll release a feature-rich update – not just a service pack - every fall."

Wow, Phat Patt.... um, you scare me.
your best bet (seriously) would be Windows Vista Business, it works wonderfully with the Core 2 Duos, and if you're really into gaming, you're gonna need a bit more ram, probly another gig.
now if you want to go LINUX, try something like Linux Mandriva 2007. it's pure 64bit, and i know for a fact your system can run it mercilessly. and to break Mr. Phat Patt's heart, Ubuntu is another distribution of Linux. you can run Ubuntu, but you won't be using your system to it's full potential.
when you load an OS like Mandriva, you can run an application called "WINE" which gives Linux the ability to run Windows applications, such as some games and other software. plus, Mandriva is freeware!! totally open source! save your money.
i've been running Linux for years, and i just recently picked up a copy of Vista Business, and it's very slick (Athlon X2 dual 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs of ram, 500GB Sata 3 hard drive)
but honestly, stay away from home premium. if you really want to pony up the dough for Vista, go with Ultimate. you'll be totally lost for the first couple days, but you'll eventually figure it out.
Good Luck.
