Interresting question, because very few people know why or when the words "Persia" for the country and "Persians" for the people were changed to "Iran" and "Iranians." It occurred in the 1930s, after the Nazis came to power in Germany. Reza Shah Pahlevi (the father of the Shah who was ousted by the 1979 revolution) was very interested in building up trade and technical relations with the Germans and in gaining their support. He changed the name of the country at the suggestion of the German ambassador as a means of flattering the Germans. Also, changing the name of the country was part of his break with the Ayatollahs, who had been a significant force in government since the restoraion of Islamic rule (after a few hundred years of Mongol rule) in the early 16th century. Modern Iran is ethnically quite a mix. The Aryan tradition is very ancient and is so overlaid that it has been virtually nonexistent as a factor in everyday life, though it is periodically resurrected as part of pollitical ideology. The Indians (Hindu) are also linguistically Aryan in very ancient times. The Nazi Aryan theory was trash, ethnographically as well as practically.

looks like you have your answer, but let's go further. Hitler had ordered the creation of false evidence suggesting that the germans were aryan. why was it so important to hitler? He was modelling Aryanism after Zionism. To prove that Zionists were not god's chosen ppl, he needed to invent an alternative tribe that WAS the superior race. Amazing how truly insane he really was, and so jealous of the jews.

The ties are genealogical, but I'm quite sure Hitler conveniently forgot that Aryans originated in S. Asia!

The Aryans of German propaganda were mythical. Sort of like the ethical Republican.
