Everyone in my neighborhood is doing it. Why are they doing this? I don't do it, and my grass looks fine. Just curious....

I do understand that some areas(Fla.) have no top soil and only sand.Consequently they cover the sand with topsoil from time to time and redo the lawn . Surely they don't do it if things are looking good as you indicate yours does.
There is another thought to consider .Sometimes someone gets a crazy idea and it is contagious.

Sometimes people spread good soil (topsoil) on their lawn so that they can reseed it . If your lawn looks good don't mess with it. You can also aerate and thatch it in the spring before you spread soil and reseed. It will rejuvenate a tired looking lawn. Broadleaf and crabgrass preventer in the spring are important too. Lucky you with the great lawn!

Are you sure it's soil? They could be putting on some seed, and using that as a topper so the wind doesn't blow it away, or the birds eat it all. Than again, it could be Steer Manure.
