mostly because they have been brainwashed by advertising. They need to have the best car and the next new gadget. Really, many people here buy cars that cost them more than a years pay ( before taxes) and work overtime to do it. Add it gas, insurance, tax, etc, and a quarter of their working life is spent on something that they could have had for a tenth of that.

Not only Americans work too hard; all others too in today's economy. It's good to balance work and play but often we're so caught up in the material things that work needs to take priority over play.

Americans work hard ,that's why they are on the top of the world.
You shouldn't stop working hard because other people are working hard too, particularly from the developing countries.
If you stop ,they will move ahead of you and then they will be on the to of the world.

so yes, we work too hard. but everyone is so afraid they are going to be called lazy or something by somebody else. we have put ourselves into this position by no protesting laws, etc.

we lose more and more protection as employees every day. then laws are passed and we just assimilate and don't argue enough.
