It depends what you are refferring to, but if you were reading a magazine or book and saw the word ed followed by a small piece of writing, then it is a note from the editor.
For example, in an interview, the editor may write 'ed-we think she means this, but we couldn't tell because of her accent!'
But as i dont know what ocntext you are speaking in, it is pretty hard.
