As one of the world's most enthusiastic butter eaters I'd like to give you my answer:
If you buy more than one packet at a time, obviously refrigerate any spare packets. It's perfectly OK to leave the current packet out BUT:
1. Keep it in the dark, in other words use a non-seethrough butter dish with a lid.
2. It also helps to keep it airtight. An ordinary lid is good enough, as the mess that results from wiping excess butter off your knife onto the edge of the dish is enough to form a seal.
During heat waves you may want to resort to the fridge although I find a kitchen cupboard is usually cool enough to stop it melting.
If you fail to observe any of these rules, all that will happen is that your butter will go rancid and taste nasty. That's due to reactions between gases in the air and fatty acids in the butter, not bacteria. There is never any need to worry about butter being dangerous to eat - that is, not unless you mix it with some sort of toxic chemical. But why would you do that?

Both of u, it shows how we as humans have different likes and dislikes. Looks like u need to take the butter keep 1/2 in fridge and other in butter dish on counter. That way both parties are happy. Good Luck!

Get two sticks of butter. Put one in a butter tray and leave it outside so you can spread it and put one in the fridge so you can be happy. I personally think that it doesn't matter. It's butter and it won't go bad if you leave it out. Butter, milk, cheese, and other dairy products aren't all the same.

Neither. Butter should be kept in the fridge to preserve it better. Half-an-hour or so, before the meal, it is taken out to soften up so as to be able to spread easily and evenly, or else it breaks up the pastry or bread.

I'm no lurpback butter expert, lol, but common sense tells me that it could be very risky not to refridgerate something like that. I'd say to keep it cold, and if he finds it too hard to spread that way, just pop it in the microwave very briefly before use to soften it a tad. Most newer microwaves have a "soften" setting. Better safe than sorry! Check the package - it probably says "refridgerate after opening".

butter should be kept in the fridge to keep better quality, I don't like hard butter either, but it is recommended that it be left out 30 minutes (I zap it in the microwave) before using to get the desired consistency...or w/e :)..anyways, when you're done with it, it should go back in the fridge

I would say both of you because I have seen it done both ways. Personally I would rather have it in the fridge because that is where I have always seen it. Also that is were you get it is in the dairy section.

I think you're both right. Keep it in the fridge so it don't spoil, But try to take it out ahead of time so you can spread it.
