If you can catch the episode of "Myth Busters" on Discovery channel, they did just that! Burning didn't work out very well, but the use of magnets with a combination of a water floatation system did but only for metal needles! They took into consideration that early needles were made of bone, the hay floated on the top of the water and eventually the bone settled to the bottom of the device. Unfortunately, one way or another you have to break down the haystack and that was the hardest part. It actually took all day and there were about 5 needles buried in two haystacks with two teams competing! Check out the show if they replay it!

Get a very large magnet and hold it over the haystack!

Use a hospital MRI system. It will either display the metallic object amidst the organic matter as designed. Or that big honker magnet will suck it right out of the hay!

Use a magnetometer. It's easier if you knock the haystack down.
