3000 RPM is pushing those squirrels under a Neon's hood much too hard. They'll soon die of exhaustion.

Your Neon has a 2.0L 4 cylider engine. Four cylinder engines are very efficient high reving power plants and at 70mph, assuming you have a 5 speed manual transmission, your Engines revolutions per minute (RPMs) would be very close to 3000. If you have an automatic 4 speed with lock up it could be slightly higher.

If you're driving 70mph, then your motor is not idling. You mean your RPM's? 3000 rpm would not be uncommon for a 4 cylinder motor at 70mph. It's ok.

Idle is when there is no throttle applied and in neutral and should be about 600 rpm.

I think you mean your R.P.M.
3,000 R.P.M. @ 70 M.P.H. seems pretty normal.
Your Rev. Meter @ idle should be around 600-650 R.P.M.

It seems as though you are missing a gear.
2200/2500 rpm sounds closer to what it should be
