Since I have been a Buddhist for 38 years, I will answer you from a Buddhist perspective. We believe that life is cause and effect ( the causes we make create our karma, or the effects we recieve.) The continuing cycle of life is birth, old age, sickness, and death. So the karma we have created from prior lives can be expressed (recieved) in this, or other lives. Our sexual preferences are just one example of this. Karma can be either good or bad, depending on the causes we make.

Perhaps you should consider sexuality as a continuum where some people place themselves at extreme ends whilst others remain in the middle (bisexuality). Of course there is some evidence to suggest a biological element to homosexuality but there could also be some sort of developmental factors as well and all of these combined would determine where people perceive themselves to be on that continuum. This approach would perhaps offer support for those who "experiment" in their youth but remain at the heterosexual end of the continuum.

How can you do a scholarly project using such unscientific input as a vague question on a public, uncontrolled, forum, such as this?

At your level of education I should think that you would have to be reading documented statistics gathered under a more controlled environment. You could accumulate any results you wish by going about it in this manner.

For instance: 100% of all people who eat bread eventually die.
Good luck.

I believe we are born with our sexual orientation, most of which are strongly one way or the other. If sexual orientation is not strong either way then and only then do I believe that the environment would become an influence on sexual orientation.
