What is the difference between an iPod and other MP3 players?

Answer
Yes there is a difference between ipod and other mp3's. The Ipod software uses the software of apple and mac's. Therefore, Ipod's can't get viruses. But Mp3's can. Mp3's all have a harddrive. Plus Ipod's are the only mp3's that can play videos. There is no other mp3 that play videos. So there are 3 differences, Ipod's are more popular, Ipod's dont get viruses, and they can play videos. Your welcome
Dylan

Actually the above answer is wrong. Many mp3 players have no hard drive. I've never heard of an mp3 player getting a virus either. A person should always scan any file they've downloaded for viruses before puting that file to use anyway. There are a lot players that play mp3 and video files and ipod is definately NOT the only one. "ZVUE MP3 Video Player" is one of them and it's only $99 The only difference between mp3 and ipod is the price. If you like paying too much, buy an ipod. If you just want a good media player, shop around. There are tons of good players out there. Also, You should never go buy something just because it's "more popular". I personally don't understand why ipod's are so popular since there are more powerfull media players out there for alot less money.

I would like to add that one good MP3 player is made by archos you can go to their site at http://www.archos.com not to mention but ipods can get viruses. My friend had an ipod and downloaded a song to it and it corrupted his hard drive. ipod or MP3 either one is susceptible to viruses.

iPods are more expensive, probably due to the fact that Apple uses consistently higher grade equipment than most competitors. iPods are also more streamlined and easier to use in my opinion. -Shadx50

if you just want portable music, i would go w/ a regular mp3 player. but if you want video, or any of the add-ons (i think theres a radio you can hook it up to, and other similar devices) i would think that an ipod is the way to go.

An MP3 player is a digital music player that plays MP3 files. Some MP3 players will play some other formats as well.

An iPod is a brand made by Apple. It is subset of MP3 players that will play MP3s but is also the only player (to the best of my knowledge) that can play songs downloaded from iTunes.

ipod
iPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple and launched in 2001. Devices in the iPod range are primarily digital audio players, designed around a central click wheel — although the iPod shuffle has buttons only. As of October 2005, the line-up consists of the video-capable fifth generation iPod, the smaller iPod nano, and the display-less iPod shuffle. The full-sized model stores media on an internal hard drive, while the smaller iPod nano and iPod shuffle use flash memory. Like many digital music players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices. In January 2007, Apple announced the iPhone, a device that combined the features of the video-capable iPod with mobile phone and mobile Internet capabilities.

Apple's iTunes software is used to transfer music to the devices. As a free jukebox application, iTunes stores an entire music library on the user's computer and can play, burn, and rip music from a CD. It can also transfer photos, videos, games and calendars to the models that support them.

Apple focused its development on iPod's unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of October 2004, iPod is the world's best-selling range of digital audio players and its worldwide mainstream adoption made it one of the most popular consumer brands. Some of Apple's design choices and proprietary actions have, however, led to criticism and legal battles.

mp3 player
digital audio player (DAP) is a device that stores, organizes and plays digital music files. It is more commonly referred to as an MP3 player (because of the MP3 format's ubiquity), but DAPs often play many additional file formats. Some formats are proprietary, such as Windows Media Audio (WMA), and, to a degree, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and MP3. Some of these formats also may incorporate restrictive DRM technology, such as Janus and FairPlay, which are often part of certain paid download sites. Other formats are completely patent-free or otherwise open, such as Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Speex (all part of the Ogg open multimedia project), and Module file formats.

There are three main types of digital audio players:

Flash-based Players - These are solid state devices that hold digital audio files on internal or external media, such as memory cards. Due to technological limitations, these are relatively low-storage devices, commercially ranging from 128MB to 8GB, such as the 2nd generation iPod nano, the SanDisk Sansa series of players, and the iriver clix, which can often be extended with additional memory. As they are solid state and do not have moving parts, they are very resilient. In effect, they do not suffer limitations that owners of Hard Drive-based players face, such as fears of dropping their player or fragmentation. Such players are commonly integrated into USB keydrives.
Hard Drive-based Players or Digital Jukeboxes - Devices that read digital audio files from a hard drive. These players have higher capacities, ranging from 1.5GB to 160GB, depending on the hard drive technology. At typical encoding rates, this means that thousands of songs — perhaps an entire music collection — can be stored in one MP3 player. Because of the storage capacity, devices that also display video and pictures are often hard-drive based. The Apple iPod, Creative Zen and Microsoft Zune are examples of popular digital jukeboxes.
MP3 CD Players - Devices that play CDs. This includes both audio CDs and home-made data CDs containing MP3 or other digital audio files

There's more to it than "an MP3 player is an MP3 player".

Each device you chose can place only certain formats. It there were only one format, not problem. In the real world, even MP3's are diferent. My old player couldn't play my friend mp3 files because the bit rate (192) was more than the player could handle (168).

Here's what an MP3 player (Zen) can handle:
Protected WMA (DRM), WMA, MP3

Here's what a simple Shuffle can play:
MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store, M4A, M4B, M4P), Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), WAV, and AIFF

Here's what a iPod can handle in addition:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Also, the iPods all have software and connectivity to both Mac & PC.

So not only does the iPod offer a lot of flexibility of music and video options, you also get to chose from a crazy world of accessories.
