We just talked about this in my anthropology class and the example that the professor gave was a snake. In most western cultures, the snake is seen as a symbol of evil, temptation, and danger (mostly because of the biblical story of Adam and Eve). They are also seen as inherently phallic and represent uncontrolled sexuality. However, in India, there is a celebration of snakes called Nag Panchami. Snakes are seen as a symbol of fertility and rebirth, as the coming together of man and woman to solve complex problems.

The first one that springs to mind is the swastika.

Now forever associated with the Nazis, it used to be (and still is) a sacred religious symbol of the Dharmic religions. Incredibly the word "swastika" derives from the Sanskrit for "well-being" !

The one that springs to mind for me is the swastika. The swastika was an ancient Indian symbol that meant good fortune or well being.

The Germans during WWII of course used it to mean something completely different.
