I must agree, I would have much preferred that Dumbledore died with a wand and fighting valiantly, perhaps taking a few Death Eaters with him, but that's not the plot. The whole point is that he weakened himself for Harry, and then immoblized Harry to further protect him, and it was all for nothing, because there was no Horcrux. That is what makes it so sad.
I would also like to note that perhaps Dumbledore's time was up. It had been noting throughout the book how he was getting slower and weaker, and then at the end he drank the potion. I think perhaps that was going to finish him off. When he was begging Snape, it is my belief that he was begging Snape to kill him, so that Snape could keep his cover as a Death Eater. Also, at the end, Snape blows up at Harry for calling him a coward. I think that was because this entire time he has been fooling Voldemort, and he just killed Dumbledore, and that was a brave thing to do, considering he was working for Dumbledore. Also, in the beginning of the book, Snape notes how Lord Voldemort is the most accomplished Ligilimens the world had ever seen. I think he said that proudly, because perhaps, Snape is a better Occulimens than Voldemort, so he could ward off his searches on his mind.

At first I thought the same way. But over time, I've come to see that JKR had no choice. Harry is the focal point of the series; therefore, at the end, he is going to have to face Voldemort alone. If Dumbledore were alive, it would be HE who would face Voldemort (since he is/was the strongest wizzard alive).

For dramatic reasons, JKR HAD to eliminate Dumbledore. Otherwise it would have taken the attention away form Harry (who HAS to be the central character). But I have no doubt that Dumbledore will make an appearance in some way in the upcoming novel.

I think it would be part of a great twist in the final HP book coming out in July 21, Deathly Hollows? JK would not end Dumbledore's life in such a simple way. I would have expected something of a grand exit for him. Well, let's find out in the last book!

I don't think she did Dumbledore an injustice at all - I mean to say that the noblest way of going is self sacrifice, isn't it?
I believe Dumbledore could have saved himself, but he chose to save Harry.
Also, with Dumbledore out of the way it gives Harry an opportunity to come into his own in the seventh book - there's no more Dumbledore to save his but every time he gets himself into trouble. I would love to see what becomes of Harry's character in the next book, because face it - he's been lucky on far to many occasions.

There have been plenty of ways in fiction to bring characters back from the dead (starting with Sherlock Holmes?) so perhaps don't assume he's dead til the series is complete. That may be a faint hope, but odder and worse things have happened.

On the other hand, there's something very wrong with writing that insists every death is heroic and magnificent, or richly deserved. That's pure fantasy in the worst sense. If you believe the world, even in fiction, should work like that you need a touch of Hemingway, (not too much).

Actually, I think that that was a perfect way to finish off Dumbledore.

"But you think you're right?" siad Harry.
"Naturally I do, but as I have already proven to you, I make mistakes like the next man. In fact, being - forgive me - rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger."

I think that JKR was trying to enhance that well-said fact of Dumbledore's by showing that his greatest mistake (trusting Snape) led to utter downfall, which is portrayed in the way Dumbledore was murdered - completely defenseless and with little honor.

I Think Dumbledore and Snape set this up together even though Dumbledore is dead he died for the greater good i think that is a very fitting way for Dumbledore to die. Saving the magical world. Also Dumbledore was powerless and he stayed calm i think he was pleading with Snape to kill him!!!!!!

I thought the death scene was pretty pathetic. I thought she could do better than that. But maybe this event will come into play with a very important part in #7. we'll just have to wait and see.
