A rave used to be an illegal party where many drugged up people would congregate at locations outside of towns to dance to techno, house, and trance music.
At least they were in 1989 in the UK.
Now they're just a gathering of drugged up youths dancing away in sweaty nightclubs to insipid trance music.

The idea is "Let's get a whole bunch of teens and 20-somethings, give them ecstacy and other fun illegal drugs, play some really loud techno crap and see what happens!". Usually either a lot of sex or a lot of cops, sometimes both.
