Magnetism is a phenomenon or a science closely associated with the properties of magnets. A magnet is a substance found in the earth. It was named after the place it was discovered in. A natural magnet is not like the ones found in the market. A natural magnet is like another piece of stone. The symmetrically shaped ones are natural magnets developed into cuboidal (bar magnet), horseshoe or ring shaped magnets.

The following are the properties of magnets:

When freely suspended, they point to North and South. To mark a magnet, it is better to know where north is beforehand. North is usually marked red

They attract magnetic materials (Iron, aluminum, Nickel, cobalt and are feebly attracted to alloys containing any of these materials)

If a strong magnet attracts any piece of magnetic material, then that piece gains magnetic properties that are lost when the piece is taken away from the real magnet (Such a piece, when it has magnetic properties, is called a TEMPORARY MAGNET)

Magnets are always surounded by a magnetic field.

When a strong magnet comes into contact with an idle wire, the wire is electrified. Similarly, a live wire magnetises any magnetic material. This property is called ELECTROMAGNETISM.

Unlike poles attract each other.

When a magnet breaks, the pieces become new magnets.

When a weak magnet and a strong magnet come into contact and are kept like that for a long time, the weaker magnet loses all its power.

When a magnet is repeatedly rubbed on an insulator or is repeatedly beaten, it gradually loses its power.
