Use your imagination about how a rainbow began:. In a far away land there was a princess who loved to go through the meadows around the castle and pick flowers for her Mother. She'd bring the flowers and leave them on a table in her Mother's room. One day she found her Mother crying and said, "Mother, what can be the matter? And the Mother said "An orge has come to the meadow and all the flowers are gone and there won't be any more for you to pick and I will miss the flowers you bring me." The princess had never known what tears were and she wiped them from her Mother's face and there were so many it filled a large cup. The princess told her Mother not to worry and went to the meadow. When she looked around she noticed something in the meadow was different. All of a sudden the large ogre was running right at her and she screamed, "Stop, what are you doing here.?" And the ogre said, "I have come to take all the flowers and there won't be anymore ever" The princess saw on the ogre's forehead an embedded gem stone. She asked him what is that on your forehead? The ogre told her it was from a witch that had cursed him and that he had to do her bidding or he would die a horrible death. All of a sudden the ogre was crying and his tears fell into the cup the princess was holding.
The princess was sure she couldn't use the tears for the flowers now because she thought the ogre was evil. When she looked into the cup she could see that the tears had changed. The orge was trying to stop crying and the princess looked at him and all of a sudden she said, "here, drink this" and without any questions that's just what he did and he fell into a deep sleep. The princess thought she had killed him and would have to deal with the witch that had cursed him, when all of a sudden the gem stone in his forehead began to glow with color. The light was becoming brigher and brighter and then the orge started to moan and groan and she was just about to run back into the castle when she realized the orge wasn't an orge at all. It was her long lost brother!! He woke to find the princess about to run away and called her by name and the gem stone fell out of his forehead. The combined tears had broken the curse and he picked up the gem stone and threw it as far as he could and when it hit the ground on the horizon all the color burst forth. Together they watched the color bow from one horizon to the other. They began rejoicing over this homecoming and decided to call the event a rainbow to mark the occasion.

Perhaps you could begin with a description of a rainbow? Maybe first talk about the sun peeking out after a bad storm and then go on to describe how the colors slowly become brighter, blend into each other, etc? You could always start somewhere in the middle of the story if you know what it is you want the basic myth to be about, then you might be better able to come up with a good begining once you're more into it.

If you want it to be religious, you could do something about the promise of the floods never being so large again, but you could also write about the leprechauns that had a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

A long long time ago in a land far far away called San Francisco there lived a commune of gay and sprite fairy people. They were giant fairies called 49'ers.
